Cost of living for a student in Umea, Sweden?
I am willing to apply Umea Institute of Design next year for my masters degree. What do you think the cost of living would be there as a student, how much will i have to pay for rent and other needs?

Studying in Sweden as a non-exchange student.?
I would love to study in Sweden as a non-exchange student. In other words as a "free mover". I have no idea what to do and how to go about signing up for classes. Online it's too complicated reading all of the guidelines. Can any Swedes (or students in Scandinavia) give me some tips? Thanks!

It depends whether you want to study undergraduate or graduate, and also how well you speak Swedish. For undergraduate, you need Swedish language skills. If you don't have good grades from svenska A + B language classes (the equivalent to Swedish high school), you'll have to take a test called TISUS to prove your skills. In order to pass, you need to have enough proficiency to write essays and communicate with ease about various subjects. A friend in Sweden just took the test, and her interview questions were about Sweden's role in the EU, so it's fairly advanced. http://www.nordiska.su.se/pub/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1538 If you are studying for a Master's or doctorate, there are many programs available in English so the TISUS isn't required. If you need a study permit, you should apply very soon, as it takes awhile to process. The Swedish migration site is here: http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/studera.html It would also be helpful to get your grades translated to Swedish points as soon as possible: http://www.hsv.se/qualificationsrecognition.4.28afa2dc11bdcdc557480002032.html All university applications are done through this site: https://www.studera.nu/ You just go to "sök utbildning" and search for what you want to study. It lists the universities with available programs, and you submit your information to those you want to apply to. If you look at the English version of the site, you can search for programs in English. https://www.studera.nu/aw/courseGuide.do?lang=en You don't say whether you have dual citizenship with an EU country. Right now there are no tuition fees in Sweden, even for international students, but this is planned to change next year. If you are accepted this autumn, you won't be affected. If you plan to study later though, and are from outside the EU (or another Nordic country, you'll be subject to tuition fees (expected to be expensive).

Is Sweden a good country for my student exchange?
Im in year 11 from Australia, considering going to Sweden for 3 months at the end of August. I have read a lot about how you listen to American music like us Aussies, and watch american movies but i was curious do you watch them in english? will it be easy for me to understand and pick up? what are teenagers like in Sweden, are they easy to get along with?

Just as a warning, cheap housing can be difficult to get (especially in Stockholm). First-hand contracts are cheapest, but people queue for these flats for years. You'll need to rent a room or take a 2nd hand contract, some of which are illegal, so be wary of your rights. http://www.thelocal.se/24858/20100208/ Blocket is one of the more popular rental sites, but it's mostly in Swedish (occasionally there's an English ad). You could try pasting the ads into Google Translate, which makes it vaguely readable. People rent rooms for as low as ~2000 SEK/month (which is much less than £2000). i don't have annual income but i have money with me. i have made a credit card at Swedbank which i can't use online purchasing. what kind of card can i apply if i want to buy things online?

You might want to do what our kids did in college--put your money in a US bank and get a debit card which draws money directly from your checking account, just as if you had written a check. It works exactly like a credit card for online purchases. I use mine that way all the time. You don't have quite as much fraud protection with a debit card as with an actual credit card, so make sure the site's order page is secure and that the company is reputable.

Should i be an exchange student in sweden or france or ireland??
Please help me!!!! I would like to be a exchange student for my Jr year but im not sure where to go!!!!!! Ireland is the most expensive Most French dont like most Americans Im irish and look irish Im still trying to choose what language to learn

I definately vote France. You will have an opportunity to show the French that not all American are "stupid Americans", and you'll also learn that not all french people hate Americans. One of my best friends in the world in French, and we met in college when she came to the US as an exchange student.

Well, I would have to say Sweden. Although, I have never been, it is most appealing to me. It has such history, and then there is modern Sweden with all of the design and such. AND the Swedish language is by far the easiest language I have ever seen. Like, here we have 'am', 'is' and 'are' as state of being verbs, they just use 'år' for everything. Its awesome. Penna = pen. Mig = me. (Pronounced Mey) So you see when I mean with the similarities. But, your question does depend on what degree you are going for. And I am assuming your a Jr in college, not high school. haha. Oh, and if you choose Sweden, or want to learn a bit more language to help you decide, go here, http://www.onlineswedish.com/main.php , Björn rocks! :D

Please do not listen to people that truly do not know what they are talking about. Paris may not treat many Americans well from time to time but in truth they do not treat french people well if they are not from Paris as well. I do a lot of business in France and Switzerland and except for two times in Paris I have always been treated extremely well. I do not speak French but try and they like that you at least try. France is full of culture and the place to be for good food in Europe so you would not be disappointed. As well you could literally go into Switzerland by train for the weekend if you wanted to. Ireland is beautiful and friendly but limited as to what you could do.

Jenny, I'm French and I want to give you an advice : don't listen the anti-french propaganda developped by your government. The French don't hate Americans ! Believe me. They just disagree with the US foreign policy, that's all. They'll treat you as an individual, with respect if you respect them. Just an argument for convice you of going to France : to become fluent in an other language than yours. Think about the benefits in the future !!! You're welcome in France. (sorry for my poor english...)
