Student Exchange in Sweden?
Student Exchange in Sweden?
I was looking at the student exchange programs that are given by my college/university and I was wondering if Sweden is a good place to study abroad? From the research gathered it seems, that most of the subjects offered will be taught in English, (particularly science, which is great because my degree is a science degree) and was wondering if there were any other European counties like that? (besides the UK) Also, I am aware that Sweden is in northern Europe, but is it easy (cheapish - most likely no plane flights, just trains) to travel to other places around Europe on weekends or breaks? (such as France, Italy, Belgium, Spain etc) If not, what do you think would be the best Europe to study abroad for a science student that doesn't speak any other language besides English? Thank you all in advanced.

I have had friends study in Sweden and they loved it. It was a completely different culture (we're Irish), and they found it fascinating. None of them study science, but they enjoyed their classes, and the Universities as a whole. Traveling is very difficult if you're based in Sweden, especially to the areas you mentioned. You would be restricted to areas in Scandinavia, and very northern continental countries- such as Denmark, Brussels. If you haven't considered Ireland, I would look into it. I know I may be biased, but I have a lot of friends studying science degrees here and they seem to enjoy it.

Can i apply for student visa from Sweden. I am a Pakistani National.?
First of all i would like to give you a brief background before i highlight the inquiry. I am an Engineering Graduate and i have been looking to pursue for higher education. I have applied at various institutions around the world but my major preference is to do my Masters from the United states of America. I have currently applied in 3 universities in USA and awaiting their response somewhere around late September. I have currently been selected at Royal Institute of Technology at Stockholm, Sweden and for that, i have sent my Passport to obtain student visa from Sweden. After receiving the student Visa, i am looking forward to leave for Sweden in early August 2009. Inquiry: The question that i want to ask from your team is that, if i get selected in USA, what will be the line of action for me. Can i apply for Student Visa for USA whilst i am staying in Sweden, Or do i have to be present in Pakistan? Can i apply from American Embassy in Sweden with the same passport if i get selected in an american university? As mentioned earlier, i consider experience in USA more valuable as it is an English speaking country. Please provide me a speedy response with detailed information related to my query. Thanking you in anticipation. With best wishes, Bilal Hussain Contact # 0345-2390357 email : bilal.wajih@live.com

having being ilegal once in Sweden is it possible to come back?
I was a master student in Sweden for one year. However, my visa expired and I lived there ilegally for eigth months (I was granted only four months, once I had to apply for a visa after entering the country due to major reasons). I left Sweden in September 2008. I want to visit my boyfriend in coming June and would like to know if they will let me in after nine months have passed since I left that country?

If you were not kicked out of the country or being caught leaving in the country illegally, then you have possibilities of applying for a new visa. Btw isn't cool to break rules..If you are granted for four months, then accept the period you are being granted for, If you wanna avoid rejections in near future.
2 :
If you are applying for a new Schengen visa you will probably be rejected. Breaking the rules once makes them very skeptical about you respecting the visa terms. In fact you might have been blacklisted for up to 7-8 years from the *entire* Schengen zone!
3 :
Yes, this depends on how pissed they were with you last time. It also depends on which country you actually are from. Is your boyfriend a Swede? It may help. Or make them more aware of you planning to stay, so perhaps you should be careful about this fact... if this thing is serious, and all else fails, you may need to make him marry you or something, and then get a right to move to Sweden due to that. But that's probably a bit of a stretch... But seriously, this is a tough question, and I'm only speculating, sorry.

None. Plus, Nigerians are blacklisted, son.

Nigerians can apply for 2011 spring semester admissions in Sweden. It's true that Sweden has imposed tuition on international students, but this takes effect from 2011 autumn semester admission. If you are lucky to apply before 15th August, 2010 which is the deadline, you will be entitled to free education in Sweden until you finish your study program. Meanwhile, there are other tuition free universities for international students in Europe. These tuition free universities didn't stop granting free education to international students. When I am an exchange student, will my family have to host another student?
I want to become a foriegn exchange student for Sweden. I have checked most of the foreign excahnge student programs and don't see anything about my family having to take someone in if i leave. Please answer, my sister is fine with me becoming an exchange student but is extreamley worried that she will have to live with an exchange student.

Some programs require it, some don't, some reauire it in certain places. For example, in North America, Rotary generally does not require a family to host an exchange student. But in Europe, it is often required that the family hosts an exchange student. If the program information doesn't mention anything, your family will probably not be required to host (although the program may ask your family to consider it). If in doubt, send and email and ask.
2 :
I do not know about every exchange program, but I am currently an exchange student in Germany through Y.F.U. (Youth for Understanding) and they do not require your family to become a host family. There is a benefit through hosting an exchange student while you are abroad, I think they take a portion of the cost off, but it's not required. My family in the US didn't take an exchange student.
3 :
No they will not, but they can expect plenty of pressure from your organization to do so.

I can't help you on this front, however, you should look into mail forwarding services. http://www.bongous.com is the one I use. As a subscriber you save 50% on international shipping anywhere in the world and they provide an official US address for your US shopping. With the dollar as low as it is, there are some great bargins in the US.

Minimum costs of living in Sweden as a student?
Minimum costs of living in Sweden as a student?
I have a part time job that can be done from anywhere (just needs internet) earning around 400-500e. I certainly can't have fun, no travels etc. is that enough to live there? thanks for your assistance.

well housing is very expensive. Also you will need to register at the tax office to get a ''Personnumer''. This will then allow you to get access to an internet contract. then just go shopping in Lidl or Dagsliv or PrisXtra. Also avoid Stockholm as it is very expensive. On the whole I´d say that it will be very hard but if you´re lucky and look for a room outside of Stockholm you might find one for about 230e and then the internet should cost about 30 per month too Good luck
2 :
€500 is just over 5000 SEK. It depends on where you live, but it's possible (although very difficult) even in Stockholm. You would have to rent a room in shared housing (and get lucky enough to find one cheaply, that included utilities). 1000-1500 SEK/month could be enough for food if you only cook at home and eat simple meals (at 1000 SEK you'd be limited to things like sandwiches or rice with some vegetables). A used bike for getting around can be found for ~500 SEK, otherwise transportation cards are about 600 SEK/month in major cities. You wouldn't be able to have any extras like going out or buying non-necessary things, but it's possible if you're willing to live a very basic life while there. It would help to have some savings in case of emergencies. Here's a link to rentals under 2500 SEK/month in Sweden (everything's in Swedish): http://www.blocket.se/hela_sverige?q=&cg=3020&w=3&st=u&mre=5&ros=&roe=&ss=&se=&ca=11&md=th However, if you are from outside the EU, you need to show you have a certain amount per month before you can get a study permit. I think the amount is around 7300 SEK/month. http://migrationsverket.se/english.jsp

How to get stuff from Sweden to the US?
Hey, I'm an exchange student in Sweden right now, and I just realized how hard it's going to be to get all the stuff I've bought here back to the US. What would be the best alternative to getting it all back? Should I get a second suitcase, and just pay for that on the plane or try shipping it (Although I think that might be really expensive)? Any advice or tips would be great!

First check your airline's baggage policy so you know exactly what you can take and how much extra suitcases will cost. Then compare with shipping your stuff home via the Post Office. Be sure to ask if there are discounts for things like books, and how much it will cost to ship the packages by surface mail. Surface mail may take a month or two but should be much less expensive than airmail. Sending it home via shipping services like DHL/FedEx/UPS will be very expensive.
2 :
Smuggle everything in your coat pocket

Cost of living in Sweden for students?
Hi, I am a student who like and I like to continue my study (Master) in Sweden ,but I have no idea about the cost of living in Sweden. Can you help about it? Also I do have any knowledge about the Swedish language, Do you think I will have problems over there?

Living expenses vary depending on personal needs. However an estimated cost of living per month for a student in Sweden could be: Food 2500 Krona. Well it is a hard language to learn. Danish is much easier to learn. That my personal view.
2 :
You can live somewhat tightly, but reasonably and securely on about 7,000 kronor a month. I'd be nervous if I had less than this. 10,000 kronor a month will be very comfortable. Bear in mind that you will need to be medically insured, as you will not have access to their social services unless you have a European Union passport.
3 :
7000
4 :
an university student will automatically get 2500 kronas every month(if you're a swedish citizen) and can borrow money from (CSN) up to 4500 kronas each month. a student room in sweden will cost you around 2000 kronas, but it depends on the size of the rooz and how many you are going to be in that room. food?! it depends on how much you wanna eat, u get a pizza for 50-60 kronas. so i'd say if you live 'normal' and don't spend much money you'll pay around 2500-3000 kronas for food every month. if you can speak swedish you wont have any problems, but if you can't speak english you have to attend some swedish(language) classes first(unless you start in a English-teaching university). if you speak english well now, you'll learn swedish in 6-12 months. check www.studera.nu and www.csn.se

1. Most of Sweden do. Notice the weirdness is in the north, and if you don't go much north of Stockholm, (or Uppsala,) you still have a "night" and a "day". 2. I don't even think Sweden has universities north of the Arctic Circle. They are all in the normal world;-). 3. If you are so damned afraid of the cold, you just stay in the south, ie, choose Lund. But it's not as horrible as you seem to think in Gothenburg or Stockholm.

What's it like as an international student in Sweden?
I'm currently a freshman at the University of Kansas, and I've never been outside of the country. Well, I visit family in Mexico, but I don't really count that. Anyway, I want to study next year in Sweden. I'm just in love with the country, culture, and history. I'm just not sure what it would be like for an international student. I've done some research, but I'd like some... first hand information? I don't know. I haven't decided if I want to study for a semester or for a year. I've never been too far from my family before, so a year might be TOO much. I'm still deciding. Any tips? Advice? Stories? Also, I'd be studying at Uppsala.

I knew a girl from Seattle who went there and all the time she kept talking how amazing the place was. She said it was one of the nicest places she'd ever been. Students there can become a part of a group they call nations and she would tell me of this old traditions they had and how fun it was. I think she was an exchange student from UW, but not sure. Anyway, I guess it should be great because the place has been there for ages and it's like harry potter school with the old chambers and stuff. And it is an hour away from Stockholm, which is a great place. And once you are in Europe, you can just hit hit the road and get to any of the other great countries like France or Italy on weekends. So I would go there for a year.

Not only am I fluent in the language, but most of my family lives there, so its much less "sketchy" than anyone else who might be wanting to do this. I have absolutely no clue how to even get started. I am also wondering if I can choose to stay with my grandparents or my aunt or even my mom, etc. Or if its random. Please, any feedback would be great. Also, I know what the major programs are, I just dont know if i need to go to their website or what? hellloooo I'm 17 and a senior and considered this option as well! (Sure wish I had done it now!) Basically no one can give you info because the exchange programs that are used vary from school to school. So start out by going to your guidance counsler - she will have all of these materials for you in addition to better answers to your questions! I'm sure you can choose your family, but the agency will want to "check them out" first. It's a company policy but you may be able to have them skip that part by having your parents sign a legal document with the company or something like that. (I have lots of family in sweden too). Anyways, good luck! (btw, its so awesomee that you speak Swedish. I speak French so my dad is always upset that I picked that over his native language! =(

Anyways, good luck! (btw, its so awesomee that you speak Swedish. I speak French so my dad is always upset that I picked that over his native language! =(

Go for it. I am 17 and live in New Zealand, next year I hope to go on a exchange to Italy or Spain. Feel free to email me or msn me at goldenprincess89@hotmail.com. Swedish is a moderate language to learn and if you work at it you should do well. Living with a host family means that you will learn fast. I hear that living in a country is like a few years worth of lessons at home. The exchange experience should be very rewarding. Having a family and friends in Sweden would be special! You would also learn alot about yourself. You can always go on holiday but when you go on an exchange you get to see the things that tourists miss! Best regards!

I'm going to Malmo University (in Southern Sweden) next semester which begins in January. I'm not sure about Christains organisations as i'm not religious.. I've got a few Swedish friends the language is fill with massive words that are almost impossible to read. However there is never a better chance then to learn/practice the language where it is most common spoken..... This will be my first experience on exchange, however I have lived aboard before and its definatly not something you'll forget.

ok you shouldn't ask this question online. even walls have ears and seeing the situation in Iran it's very risky. Ok you should be able to get married, sweden allows marriage between gay couples. You can also register marriage at the registration office, in your city/town. It is legal so go ahead and get married. please keep this a secret and try to get a visa or permanent residency in europe as Iran is quite dangerous for you. best of luck
2 :
You can do it in Sweden.

You can do it in Sweden. But what's the point? You're only students in Sweden and gay couples aren't recognised in Iran (in fact, you may get in trouble if they find out you're a couple). So why do it? :/ That would only make sense if you're staying in Sweden (the EU) which there's no garauntee of since you're only students now. :/ Good luck though, I guess.

If you hold a Norway student visa (type D) which shows valid for "Norge" in the first column you may travel trough other Schengen countries for a total of five days in order to reach your final destination. Once you have arrived at Norway you may be able to apply for a Oppholdstillatelse (Residence permit) Arbeidstillatelse (Work permit) Bosettingstillatelse (Settlement permit/Permanent work and residence permit) which allow tourist travel for up to 90 days in a 6 months period to other Schengen countries. sweden and foriegn exchange student?
So I have been looking into it and I want to be a foreign exchange student next year, most likely to Sweden. So I have a few questions. Is Sweden a more rural or urban place? Have you ever been to Sweden and what was it like? Have you ever been a foreign exchange student to anywhere and what were your experiences? And what is a good way to come up with money, $7,000 to be exact, to make the trip?

Sweden is a very beautiful place. I have been there during the summer and I went to a Stockholm. I don't know what part of Sweden you want to go to but I believe it is pretty everywhere, I loved it! Everyone that I met there was very friendly and I loved listening to the language even though I was not there long enough to pick up any of it. Good luck, I hope you like it and have a blast. Good luck coming up with the money!
2 :
I don't have any experience as an exchange student, so I'll not go into that. But I am Swedish, so I could add a little to the rural/urban part of your question. Sweden is very urban in the sense that most people live in cities, and very few work in the agricultural sector. But there's lots of space, here, and a wood, a lake or the coastline is usually never far off - not even in the biggest cities. Have you made any plans as to what place you're going to?

Well, that all depends on what you prefer. Sweden is a little bit of both actually. Most of the Swedish population lives in cities though. I am Swedish and live in Stockholm but as a kid I went to elementary school in England, I hated it. On the other hand i guess that is what you can expect when all of a sudden you are forced into uncomfortable blazers and ugly ties when you really want to wear a Kurt Cobain t-shirt. A for the 7,000$, ????? work?

What is it like to be a foreign exchange student in Sweden? (high school). Because I'm considering to go there when im 16 or so. Was it fun? What are the people like and how is the school different from those in America? What city did you stay in? Did you make a lot of friends there and do you keep in touch with them? Was it easy to pick up on the language? How's their English? Please let me know ! Thanks!

You will love Sweden! I didn't study there in high school, but I did a summer of study in Sweden during college. It is a beautiful country and Swedes are wonderfully kind and hospitable. I was in a large town/small city called Nyköping (literally, "New City," though the castle in the heart of the old town dates from the 12th century!). I made many friends and remain in touch with them regularly. Grammatically, Swedish is a very simple language, much easier than English. However, it is difficult to pronounce. However, Swedes start learning English at a very young age, so you will have minimal communications problems. You will find, no matter where you go, that if there is a willingness to exchange thoughts, people can always find ways to communicate. European schools are structured somewhat differently than ours. Typically, when a student reaches what in the U.S. would be high school years, they usually don't change classes like we do. They stay in the same room and a different teacher comes in. That way they can fit more subjects into a school week than our 7 or 8. After school sports and clubs are sometimes not run by the school, but by community or student groups. But keep your mind on your studies. Most northern and western European schools are more advanced in their core curriculum instructions than ours, so their students take more vigorous math and science classes. Be prepared to be challenged! Culturally, Sweden is an interesting country. It is a good example of socialism that actually works. There is a very broad middle class and very little poverty. By 1980 the country met its goal of assuring that every Swede that wanted a home would have one. Though this resulted in some unattractive apartment blocks on the outskirts of some cities, Swedes are good at adapting. When they found the high concentrations of lower-income people were causing societal problems, they tore down some of the ugly apartments and built more friendly, village-like complexes and introduced a variety of social services, including community centers with pools, classrooms, gyms and programs ranging from crafts and language instruction to personal and maternal health classes. Though taxes are high, you'll find most Swedes have a nice house with at least one car, sometimes two, often a summer cottage in the country and perhaps a boat. (The family I stayed with had all of the above.) As a result of my experience in Sweden, Stockholm is my absolute favorite city in the world and I have returned several times, catching up with old friends and making new ones. I strongly encourage you to apply for an exchange program in Sweden. You will not regret it! Hej då! (That's the Swedish equivalent of "see ya!")

With a temporary residence permit issued specifically for studies work is allowed as long as the holder studies as intended. A former student can, on certain conditions, apply for a work permit from within Sweden and does not like most other people have to apply from home. This is the only formal advantage in this situation. It may be possible to stay on and work in Sweden, but you must have an employment offer where the employer demonstrates that the position already has been advertised in the EU and that the salary and other conditions are not inferior to what is usual. In practice you will need skills that are in very high demand.

I attended Uppsala Universitetet in Uppsala, Sweden for my junior year in college. I found Swedish to be ridiculously easy to learn since it is very similar to English; the pronunciation can be tough, though, as they have several speech sounds that English doesn't. Almost all classes are taught in English, and they use English-language textbooks (too expensive to translate every book into Swedish!). If you are accustomed to VERY cold, windy weather in the wintertime and really long winter nights (20hrs, on avg. in Uppsala), you'll get along fine. Late spring, summer, and fall are gorgeous. At midsummer (late June), the days are about 22hrs long. Swedes are probably the most reserved of all Europeans, so most people you'll hang with will likely be other foreign students. The Swedish government allows several weeks of vacation, both in winter and in summer. That means your winter break will be about 6 weeks. It's plenty of time to explore the rest of Europe and get some sunshine! Sweden is REALLY expensive, so be prepared.

The UK is not party to the Schengen agreement. If you want to apply for a Schengen visa, you should do so at the Embassy of the country which is your main destination, even if it is not the country you are entering first Your question is a little confusing as you are issued with a Schengen visa alongside a work or student visa in a Schengen country. Are you perhaps exaggerating? Schengen visas are valid for six months and allow you a maximum stay of 90 days within the Schegen countries. You must have at least three months validity remaining on your student visa on the date of your return from holiday to be able to apply for a Schengen visa from the UK.

He needs to complete college, get work experience and apply as an immigrant if he is still interested. In a lot of countries, the last two years of high school are spent in a junior college. Foreign exchange programs don't allow continued residence.

Positives are that the culture is very liberal. Its also very socialized and they pay one of the highest income tax rates in the world. The disparity between rich and poor is so much smaller. People are well educated, well informed and have a broad outlook. Negatives -- its cold. And there is not as much ethnic diversity as you find in the USA or UK. Kinda homogenous after a while.

I can either be a foreign exchange student in Germany or Sweden? Which one should I choose!?
Being a foreign exchange student in either Germany or France cost the less, so I am going to one of those two. Which one should I choose? Which country is better? I mean, in terms of cleanliness, friendliness, economic strength, military strength, etc. Sorry! I meant France! In my question, where I said Sweden, I meant France! My bad!

I would vote for Germany since I live there. I also love France too but Germany is very clean and central; it is surrounded by many countries (including France) which is convenient. Which language can you capture better, German or French? You have to speak the language to enjoy yourself and to meet friends so start leaning now.
2 :
Cleanliness? WTF kind of question is that, Kyle? :-D Both would be great. The Germans have the best beer, the French have the best food. Military strength is won hands down by the French. They've got The Bomb, though both countries are NATO members so the will hardly be any invasion during your stay. As for economy, they look fairly equal an gapminder.org. The local variations within the country is much greater than the differences between countries. What is basically comes down to is which language will you be most likely to pick up most easily, and which school or university do you want to go to.
3 :
Hey, it very much depends on your language skills. The french are known to be lazy to talk in other languages, Germans on the other hand love to use foreign language skills (they probably try to speak better then you do...). As for a clean stay, well it depends on the town. Like Paris is gorgeous in the center it gets f***ed up in the suburbs (but really bad!). Berlin on the other hand is quite a crazy town but you'll sure miss a "real nice'n'fancy" part (though you can find that in Munich or Hamburg). And then there's the going out part: and to be honest, even of the Germans feel a bit distanced in the beginning, you will surely enjoy your nights more there then in France! Have a good time, where ever you go!

Studying in Sweden as a non-exchange student.?
I would love to study in Sweden as a non-exchange student. In other words as a "free mover". I have no idea what to do and how to go about signing up for classes. Online it's too complicated reading all of the guidelines. Can any Swedes (or students in Scandinavia) give me some tips? Thanks!

It depends whether you want to study undergraduate or graduate, and also how well you speak Swedish. For undergraduate, you need Swedish language skills. If you don't have good grades from svenska A + B language classes (the equivalent to Swedish high school), you'll have to take a test called TISUS to prove your skills. In order to pass, you need to have enough proficiency to write essays and communicate with ease about various subjects. A friend in Sweden just took the test, and her interview questions were about Sweden's role in the EU, so it's fairly advanced. http://www.nordiska.su.se/pub/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1538 If you are studying for a Master's or doctorate, there are many programs available in English so the TISUS isn't required. If you need a study permit, you should apply very soon, as it takes awhile to process. The Swedish migration site is here: http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/studera.html It would also be helpful to get your grades translated to Swedish points as soon as possible: http://www.hsv.se/qualificationsrecognition.4.28afa2dc11bdcdc557480002032.html All university applications are done through this site: https://www.studera.nu/ You just go to "sök utbildning" and search for what you want to study. It lists the universities with available programs, and you submit your information to those you want to apply to. If you look at the English version of the site, you can search for programs in English. https://www.studera.nu/aw/courseGuide.do?lang=en You don't say whether you have dual citizenship with an EU country. Right now there are no tuition fees in Sweden, even for international students, but this is planned to change next year. If you are accepted this autumn, you won't be affected. If you plan to study later though, and are from outside the EU (or another Nordic country, you'll be subject to tuition fees (expected to be expensive).

Just as a warning, cheap housing can be difficult to get (especially in Stockholm). First-hand contracts are cheapest, but people queue for these flats for years. You'll need to rent a room or take a 2nd hand contract, some of which are illegal, so be wary of your rights. http://www.thelocal.se/24858/20100208/ Blocket is one of the more popular rental sites, but it's mostly in Swedish (occasionally there's an English ad). You could try pasting the ads into Google Translate, which makes it vaguely readable. People rent rooms for as low as ~2000 SEK/month (which is much less than £2000). Click on a city name to narrow the search to that area. http://www.blocket.se/stockholm?q=&cg=3020&w=3&st=u&mre=&ros=&roe=&ss=&se=&ca=11&l=0&md=th And another, also in Swedish: http://www.andrahand.se/ There's a pay site which I haven't used myself, but several friends have recommended it. For 300 SEK (more if you include Stockholm), you can search ads and put your own up. http://www.bostaddirekt.com/ Here's a site to find people to share an account with: http://lostinstockholm.com/free-bostad-direkt-customerids-logins/ If you'll be a student and are even considering Stockholm, get in line now: http://www.sssb.se/index.php?page=home_eng

Follow the links above posted, since I can't give you much more, but I will let you know that you probably read "2000 pounds a week" when it is actually 2000 swedish kroner. no one here pays that much for a unit a week...

You might want to do what our kids did in college--put your money in a US bank and get a debit card which draws money directly from your checking account, just as if you had written a check. It works exactly like a credit card for online purchases. I use mine that way all the time. You don't have quite as much fraud protection with a debit card as with an actual credit card, so make sure the site's order page is secure and that the company is reputable.

I definately vote France. You will have an opportunity to show the French that not all American are "stupid Americans", and you'll also learn that not all french people hate Americans. One of my best friends in the world in French, and we met in college when she came to the US as an exchange student.
2 :
Well, I would have to say Sweden. Although, I have never been, it is most appealing to me. It has such history, and then there is modern Sweden with all of the design and such. AND the Swedish language is by far the easiest language I have ever seen. Like, here we have 'am', 'is' and 'are' as state of being verbs, they just use 'år' for everything. Its awesome. Penna = pen. Mig = me. (Pronounced Mey) So you see when I mean with the similarities. But, your question does depend on what degree you are going for. And I am assuming your a Jr in college, not high school. haha. Oh, and if you choose Sweden, or want to learn a bit more language to help you decide, go here, http://www.onlineswedish.com/main.php , Björn rocks! :D

Please do not listen to people that truly do not know what they are talking about. Paris may not treat many Americans well from time to time but in truth they do not treat french people well if they are not from Paris as well. I do a lot of business in France and Switzerland and except for two times in Paris I have always been treated extremely well. I do not speak French but try and they like that you at least try. France is full of culture and the place to be for good food in Europe so you would not be disappointed. As well you could literally go into Switzerland by train for the weekend if you wanted to. Ireland is beautiful and friendly but limited as to what you could do.

Jenny, I'm French and I want to give you an advice : don't listen the anti-french propaganda developped by your government. The French don't hate Americans ! Believe me. They just disagree with the US foreign policy, that's all. They'll treat you as an individual, with respect if you respect them. Just an argument for convice you of going to France : to become fluent in an other language than yours. Think about the benefits in the future !!! You're welcome in France. (sorry for my poor english...)

Sweden is planning to start charging fees for non-EU students as early as 2010. If you don't start your education before then, it's unlikely it will be free. http://www.thelocal.se/12594/20080623/ If you are proficient in Swedish, it's possible to get a part-time job. If you don't speak good Swedish, finding work will be really difficult. Student jobs are usually in restaurants, stores and other service work with late hours. Even jobs that don't deal with customers require language skills, because there are always other students who speak Swedish to do unskilled work. If you have special skills (technical, computers, several languages, etc) it may be easier to get a job. I think Stockholm is the most difficult city to find work in, even though there are more job offerings, there are so many people applying to each position. If you plan on going to Sweden, start learning Swedish now, it will make it easier for you once you're living there. You'll be safest if you have the funds to cover all your living costs, then hope to find work in addition to that. Swedish job sites: http://platsbanken.arbetsformedlingen.se/Standard/Start/Start.aspx http://www.jobbsafari.se/ Edit: I just read that they are changing the date for tuition fees to 2011. http://www.thelocal.se/19410/20090512/

I want to know about Sweden citizenship process for a student.I am going to do master of duration 1 year.?
I have heard that when one applies for student visa,he has to take residence permit stamp on passport. 2nd step is to take work permit 3rd step is to live 5 years in sweden and Then apply for citizenship. I am a non-EU student. Please tell me these steps are correct or is there any problem with my information Your help will be appreciated REGARDS

Yes that's probably what you'll have to do. If it wasn't because you were studying though I'd recommend getting a work permit first though, put that's not relevant anymore. You should know however that foreigners usually have difficulties in the job market. Language and mentality are very important factors. Education comes before experience as long as you have at least some experience. The mentality thing is difficult to explain but I can if you want. Ask if there's anything else.
2 :
A holder of a residence permit for studies does not need a separate work permit. You have to live in Sweden for five years on a permanent residence permit to be eligible for citizenship. Foreign students are rarely if ever issued permanent residence permits. The time as a student will not count towards a Swedish citizenship.

Eh.. wow... by yourself? Are you sure you have thought this through? lol. Ehm if you were living alone the expected student costs would range from 6 700 crowns to 7 400 depending on where you live. Since you're not Swedish i don't think you can take maternity leave.. Sending your kid to kindergarten.. that will be cheap since your a student and single. The cost is based on how much money you make and how many kids you have who goes to kindergarten.. just to make sure everyone can afford it.. there are several reasons we have all but erased the so called lower class. The rest is payed for by us, the taxpayers. Your education as I'm sure you know is free for everyone who's human but what I don't think you know is that there is a proposal to change that. If that proposal goes through people who aren't citizens in the EU, Norway or Iceland would have to pay for it. Keep up with the news. Most people I've talked to don't think that will happen though. Anyway. The cost of your kid.. A normal Swedish kid.. 4 000 a month. Your kid.. 1 000/ 2 000 a month. That plus kindergarten. You only have one kid which means you you pay 3 % of what you make every month for the service.. unless you make more than 38 000 kr. Then you pay 1 140 kr. Never more than that. Basically you're living expenses a month should range from 9 000 to 12 000 (most probable a monthly expense around 9 000/ 10 000) a month.

How much does student live in a big city in Sweden cost per month?
I will live together with my girlfriend, which will hopefully minimize the rent to 1500-2000SEK per person. But what will my other expenses be? How much money do I need for basic food (not steak every day)? What about public transport? I'm looking at Goteborg and Stockholm, but possibly also Lund.

I can give you monthly estimates for Stockholm. The bills are total prices, which I guess might be divided in half in some cases. Rent: your estimate is probably okay for half of a small shared flat Utilities: up to 1000 kr Internet: 300 kr Mobile phone: 150-300 kr Transportation card: ~700 kr Food: at least 1500 kr Going out: depends on your habits, but budget around 200 kr for a cheap restaurant, 100 kr for a film, 60 kr for a beer (can cost half that if you know where to go), 300-600 kr for a concert You could get by on as little as 6000 kr/month each if you lived very economically. 8000 kr would give you budget but comfortable living.

Let me research that and get back to you.
2 :
All the information you need is on the official site for higher education in Sweden: https://www.studera.nu/studera/241.html Applications to all Swedish universities are sent to the same place so it will take as long to get an answer no matter where you apply. Some universities may be more efficient in their communication after you have applied though of course.

Should you hve been awarded a long stay type D visa for Sweden you will not need a Direct Airside Transit Visa for the United Kingdom. Sweden is a country of the European Economic Area (EEA). Holders of long stay visa of a EEA country can travel via the United Kingdom without the need of a Direct Airside Transit Visa. http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/doineedvisa/visadatvnationals .. The best two programs are AFS and YFU. Both offer scholarships and help with fundraising ideas and opportunities. You still have some time, so that is also helpful. http://www.yfu-usa.org/ http://www.afsusa.org/usa_en/home THe best way to convince your mother is to introduce her to current and/or former exchange students so she can see the benefit for herself.

For long term studies to exceed three month you will have to apply for a Swedish residence permit (Uppehållstillstånd) which also serves as visa waiver for the other Schengen countries for a stay of up to 90 days within each 6 months. If you are a visa national and plan a short term study in Sweden up to three month you should add to your application that you also plan to visit other Schengen countries; otherwise you may be issued a national visa (type D) which would be valid for Sweden only. http://www.migrationsverket.se/english/estudier/index.html The Schengen zone meanwhile consists of 25 countries which are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. You may also visit the microstates which are land-locked by Schengen countries like Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City. http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/diplo/en/WillkommeninD/EinreiseUndAufenthalt/Schengen.html .. Edit: (based on the next answer) The next answerer does not seem to have a clue about Schengen procedures or tries to promote a commercial website which cannot be recommended since it contains lot of wrong information.

Hi, Having student visa for Sweden does not necessarily mean that you need or need not another visa to enter other countries in Europe. It depends on limitations for your student visa, on your nationality, etc. To answer your question, take a look here at page called WHO NEEDS SCHENGEN VISA (http://www.euro-dollar-currency.com/who_needs_schengen_visa.htm). This page provides a list of countries of which their nationals need to apply for Schengen visa when traveling to Europe. To check whether your student visa is the actual Schengen visa, compare what you have in your passport to the picture shown on this page called SCHENGEN VISA IMAGE (http://www.euro-dollar-currency.com/schengen_visa_image.htm)
