I am a Canadian student going to Sweden to study in January 2010. Do I have to physically go to the Swedish Embassy in Ottawa to get my student visa or is there some other way to get it? And if so, is it quicker to go to the embassy?

See site below to see that you must apply in person at the embassy in Ottawa or a consulate. See 3rd site for list of consulates and how to contact them...then you can contact the nearest one and ask for sure if you may apply there.

You don't have to go physically to the Embassy in Ottawa but may apply for the visa at any Swedish Consulate in Canada. However it will take about 3-4 working days longer since the applications need to be send by courier service to the Swedish Embassy before forwarding to Sweden. The regular processing time for a student visa application takes 6-8 weeks since the decisions are made by the Swedish Migration Board in Stockholm for most of the applications. http://www.swedenabroad.com/Page____87957.aspx .. http://www.migrationsverket.se/english.jsp ..
