Where can I get a student loan as a U.S. citizen to study at Umea University in Sweden?

Where can I get a student loan as a U.S. citizen to study at Umea University in Sweden?
I'm planning on attending Umea Institute of Design (Part of Umea University) in Umea, Sweden this coming fall. I've noticed that Umea isn't on the FASFA list of approved schools...am I out of luck or is there a bank that will give me a student loan?

Look at their website for the Internation student financial aid forms they accept. If you have good credit, most banks will allow you to take out a loan, regardless of where you attend school.

Sweden tourist visa is required for citizens of Sri Lanka.
2 :
The United Kingdom does not participate in the travel part of the Schengen agreement. UK visa do not exempt from the visa requirement of Sri Lankan passport holders for Sweden. You will need to apply for a visa which will take at least two weeks since the other Schengen member countries need to be consulted prior to a visa issue, based on your nationality. You can apply for the visa up to 90 days prior to the proposed travel date. See details of the application requirements here: http://www.swedenabroad.com/Page____23300.aspx ..

Visa requirement is based on the citizenship of your passport.

There are many people/families who are happy to offer accommodation and meals to a foreign student for payment. The University should have a list of people who do this. Email them and ask them to send you a list of the people who are looking for foreign students and then you could email them direct.

You can return as tourist using a U.S. passport and stay for up to 90 days in the countries of the Schengen zone. You should ask the embassy this question. It is depandant on each person's case and if they need a lot of background checks. If you have had visa's granted before then this will make it quicker.

Your U.K. visa does not suffice since the United Kingdom is not part to the Schengen border-less travel agreement. You will need to apply for a visa to Sweden in advance from India unless to are staying in the United Kingdom for longer than 6 month and hold the according visa. http://www.sweden.gov.se/sb/d/2188/a/108892 .. http://www.swedenabroad.com/Page____23300.aspx ..

Is it possible to get a part-time job in Sweden as a college student who hasn't learned Swedish?

Is it possible to get a part-time job in Sweden as a college student who hasn't learned Swedish?
I am applying for a semester at Vaxjo next Spring. I am from the U.S. (fluent in English) but don't know any Swedish right now. Firstly, is it possible/legal for me to get a job as a student intending only to stay for a semester? Secondly, would I realistically be able to get a job, even if it were something simple in the school? Thanks for your help.

It depends on what sort of student you'll be, you should check with Migrationsverket when you apply for a study permit as to whether it also allows you to work. I believe that you will be granted a work permit as well, but some exchange programs are under different rules. http://migrationsverket.se/english/estudier/index.html As for realistically getting a job, it's very unlikely. I lived in Sweden for two years before I found work, even though I was fairly fluent in Swedish in less than a year and applied for every job I came across. With no Swedish you'll find it very difficult. English isn't really considered a job skill, since Swedes tend to speak excellent English. There will also be many other students and immigrants in your position, vying for the same few jobs as you. Unless you have some specialized skills that make you stand out, you shouldn't count on finding work. If you do happen to find something, consider yourself lucky.

I think you would have to get a Swedish visa for Sweden - if you only have a German Visa. It actually looks like it should be possible with a Schengen Visa, but check with the embassy first. Ask the Swedish Embassy.
2 :
If you have a German Visa, you should be allowed to travel there without another visa for a holiday. But I just can say what the other one did. Ask the swedish embassy in germany.
3 :
When you check para 3. of the key points of the Schengen Acquis you can read: "Third-country nationals with a residence permit valid in one fully implementing country may travel on a valid passport, without requiring a visa, for up to 90 days per six-month period to any other fully implementing country; they are also not subject to border checks at the Schengen area's internal borders." http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/diplo/en/WillkommeninD/EinreiseUndAufenthalt/Schengen.html#t2 .. Your German Student Visa [Residence Permit/Aufenthaltstitel] in your Ecuadorian passport authorizes you for tourist travel to all other Schengen countries to include Sweden.

A good gift for a foreign student from Sweden?

A good gift for a foreign student from Sweden?
Would it be alright to give her a copy of Pippi Longstocking (written in Swedish of course) with some swedish fish? I feel bad that she can't spend Christmas with her family in Sweden so I want to give her something that would remind her of being home or whatever. Would that be cute or non-understandable?
Christmas - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Find something they dont have in Sweden.
2 :
The book and candy are a great idea. Also why not ask what is one favorite dish from Home she misses and ask her if she knows how to make it so you all can share it with her to help her feel kind of at home when shes not. Or better yet contact her family and set up a Christmas video chat for her as a surprise so she can still see and talk to them and know they miss her just as much as she misses them.
3 :
The book is fine. She might enjoy a Christmas gift basket of American foods (ham, cheese, crackers, candy). Or maybe some American candy which she can't get in Sweden (Ghiradelli, Russell Stover, Fannie Mae, etc.). You could also invite her to have Christmas dinner with your family. Europeans really love American beef and I am sure that prime rib will be a hit.
4 :
I think that trying to give her things that are swedish might come off bad... If someone gave me something just because it was 'made in america' while i was living abroad I would've been upset. I would give her something to remind her of her time here, something she can take back with her.... Keep in mind, she's not here to feel 'at home' or else she wouldn't have come! I think its best to give her something she'll always remember... What about a nice dinner/ or some sort of thing she can't treat herself to while being here?
5 :
I think that would be cute, but there are lots of things that could be cute. Cuteness is kind of a universal language (stuffed animals work for pretty much any culture, for example), so you don't necessarily need to feel constrained to get something explicitly Swedish to communicate warm fuzzies. :) Many international students like things that they don't have in their home country to have later as a souvenier, but I can see wanting to remind her of home, too. That's a very thoughtful idea!
6 :
These are PERFECT -- I bought them for my family a few years ago and they have asked for them each year since. They are cute, unique useful and more importantly AFFORDABLE! They are having a sale for the holidays. I have also given them to friends, coworkers and used them for secret santas. Here is the website: http://herculittles.com/home.htm Good Luck!
7 :
She probably has a copy of Pippi already. I live in Sweden and I think that she would probably like something that reflects you and something of your own culture. I'm not sure where you live (which country) but I do know that many students here go abroad and love to tell stories of their experiences in other countries when they come back, the people they've met, the gifts they got. Not all Swedes are into "Swedish" things.
8 :
Hi Alyssa, You have already gotten some very nice suggestions. May I recommend, even the simple gift of Ginger Bread, house, cookies, or something. In Sweden people often give Ginger Bread Hearts with names on them as a gift. Often, they make Ginger Bread Houses together, before Christmas. Albeit, this may make her miss home even more. . . Happy Happy and Merry Merry from Santa Land, JohnW
9 :
I just want to point out that "Swedish Fish" is pickled herring to most Swedes, we don't have the candy "Swedish Fish" in Sweden. In Sweden the candy is named "Fiskar" (Fishes) and it's not a popular kind of candy. If she eats fish then I think pickled herring is a great idea since it's not that easy to find in other countries. One tradition in Sweden is to watch Donald Duck on TV at 3 pm. It has been a tradition since 1960 and most Swedes watch at least a little part of it. You could possibly get a DVD with it or something like it for her. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_All_of_Us_to_All_of_You Or You could give her links so that she can watch the segments on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAHk8nPAa-8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koQFJ_YqvsA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-x6qTiERS8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J4npb4NwjI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOvbsj2ytf0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfb-X30ochk&feature=related If I was stuck in another country the I wouldn't want to be reminded of home, I'd like to experience how Christmas is at the place where I'm at.

Moving to Sweden as a student, need bank account?
Next week I will be moving to Lund, Sweden for a year to get my MBA. I would like to open a bank account there, however I've heard it is quite difficult to open one if you are an international student (I am from the US). Does anyone have experience as an international student opening a bank account in Sweden? Any info would be much appreciated!

i opened a bank account in Denmark and didn't have any trouble. Of course the school had something set up with one of the banks. I would ask your school, it is probably a common question
2 :
If I'm not mistaken I think the difficulty lies in this, at least for refugees without papers: To open a bank account as a foreigner you need a Swedish identity card, but the company who used to issue identity cards to foreigners doesn't do it anymore. Only the banks does it now. The problem is that you need an account in the bank to get an identity card. (A weird Kafka-like situation, the legislation hasn't kept up with this situation yet). However, I'm pretty sure there are some ways around it, especially if you are American. Maybe they accept American identity cards? You could try to send an email to the Swedish bank Nordea and ask for more information on how to get an account as a foreigner. Try this link: https://www.nordea.se/sitemod/modules/forms/index.aspx?formid=f634bad8-942f-49dc-a2ad-0795fe58c595 Select "Utlandsfrågor" (= Foreign topics) or "Övrigt" (= Other). "Namn" = Name. "E-post" = E-mail. "Rubrik" = Headline. "Meddelande" = Message. Or try to call +46 8 614 70 00 (Head Office of Nordea).

My parents are wanting me to be an exchange student for a semester somewhere my junior year in high school. i want to go to sweden, but swedish language courses aren't available in my school and i have been in spanish for 3 years. do i have to be in a swedish class in order to go there and go to school there? or can i just learn from something like rosetta stone? do i have to be fluent? and what can I do to be eligible for the program?

i live in sweden and there was recently an exchange student from romania at my school and she only spoke english so i'm guessing you don't need to be fluent in swedish. it may be different in other schools/colleges/universities in sweden. anyways... have fun if you decide to go :) you can always teach yourself a bit from the internet if you go. heres some basic words in swedish. hello - hej bye bye - hej då do you speak english? - pratar du engelska? what - vad food - mat your welcome - varsågod thank you - tack meatballs - köttbullar train - tåg me - jag/mig high school - högstadiet

One of the wonderfule things about Sweden is that most of the people there are fluent in English. And as an American, your grades over there don't transfer most of the time...they only look at the fact that you are behaving well, and trying, and learning. It would be a WONDERFUL experience. Thing is, in my experience, you have to pick three countries, and you might not get ANY of them. Granted, going to a country where the language you are studying is a superb way to polish up the rough edges, but that is NOT the only reason for doing an exchange! http://www.csiet.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=66167&orgId=cosfiet Here are some of the top companies in the US. Take a look at their requirements, then check with your guidance office and the foreign language teachers, and they will help you out with the specific program(s) you would be most likely to use and their requirements. Wherever you wind up, you will most likely ALWAYS think of it as your second home, and hopefully, you will maintain the friendships for your whole life! I know whole families that wound up exchanging back and forth, all the kids went to Germany, all the German kids came and spent a year with the family in the US. It can be a terrific experience!

Sweden has strict immigration laws. If they find that you have a criminal record, your most likely to be rejected entry to the country as a student. On the other hand, if they think you won't be able to handle to pay tax, university fees or any other necessary fees, your most likely to be denied entry.
3 :
Just wait on the rejection letter and see what it says. There are a zillion reasons why you could have been denied.

See site below to see that you must apply in person at the embassy in Ottawa or a consulate. See 3rd site for list of consulates and how to contact them...then you can contact the nearest one and ask for sure if you may apply there.
2 :
You don't have to go physically to the Embassy in Ottawa but may apply for the visa at any Swedish Consulate in Canada. However it will take about 3-4 working days longer since the applications need to be send by courier service to the Swedish Embassy before forwarding to Sweden. The regular processing time for a student visa application takes 6-8 weeks since the decisions are made by the Swedish Migration Board in Stockholm for most of the applications. http://www.swedenabroad.com/Page____87957.aspx .. http://www.migrationsverket.se/english.jsp ..

As far as I know, International students are not allowed to work part/full time in Sweden, not unless you have a wok permit.
2 :
A residence permit issued for studies allows the holder to work without a work permit. The limitations on work hours are the same as for citizens and permanent residents. Studying without a residence permit, which is legal in some situations, will not allow employment. The permit can be revoked if the holder does not study as stated in the residence permit application.

Students can work up to 20 hours per week as long as they have a residence permit and a Swedish personnummer (ie not exchange/guest students). If you are fluent in Swedish, you can take any sort of job that has part-time hours, like working in a restaurant/kitchen/café/club, shops, hotels, cleaning, as a personal assistent, etc. If you don't speak Swedish, you'll likely have difficulty finding work at all. Some people are able to get jobs handing out newspapers and posting bulletins, but there's a lot of competition (especially in larger cities) for only a few jobs. Depending on your skills and languages, there may be other options open to you, like tutoring in your native language, working in a call center or getting a part-time job in a skilled position. However, you can't count on getting work. I know many international students that weren't able to find work for several years (and in a few cases, at all). Student hours conflict with a lot of jobs, which means there's just not much available. There's no minimum wage in Sweden, but most entry level jobs earn about 90 kr (SEK) per hour, which is a little over €8/£7. If you work somewhere like a student union (available at Uppsala and Lund, not sure about elsewhere), the pay will be less. Students generally pay taxes, it depends somewhat on your situation and how much you work/earn.

What do I consider if I want to be a foreign exchange student in sweden?
I wanted to do a foreign exchange student program in sweden, but is it possible to just do a program for the summer? I was thinking for the summer after I graduated high school that I would want to go to sweden and do the whole foreign exchange student thing. Would I be to old to go?

now you haven't really given up your age but i doubt that you would be to old. in Most exchange programs you can be between 15-20 years. It would be alot better for you if you could do the whole year, because most people just feel like it goes way to quick after a whole 1 year, so when your there you probably wouldn't feel like its enough and maybe regret not going for a whole year ( ofc if you have no choice half a year is also awesome, there are a few people who find that a year is to much (. Now regarding the program i personly would recommend AFS as the greatest one, mainly because unlike alot of the other big programs doesn't give money to the host family so you wont live in a family who just took you for the money + theres alot of other small things. Now about sweden then it really is alot better to go in the winter, its just plain borring in the summer ( atleast in my opinion, probably because i love snow ) Now i higly reccomend doing alot more research about the subject. A exchange year ( or half year :) Maybe try checking out the homepage of AFS and google some other ones. Either way i would say its a awesome experience and i would say that you totally should go for it, i my self wouldnt give up my experince as a exchange student for anything. and sry for the misspellings english is not my native languance

When you hold a student visa (type D) it only authorizes the travel into the country of issue and would state valid for "Sverige" and would authorize a prior transit of up to 5 days to reach the destination country. It is not like a tourist visa (type C) which states valid for "Schengenstater" and you can use it for traveling through all 25 countries in Europe forming the Schengen zone. What I just can't understand is the fact that you are a student but obviously are not capable of reading and understanding the provisions which have been told to you when you got your student visa. Once you should get a residence permit (Uppehållstillstånd) you may travel up to 90 days in a six months period to other Schengen countries to include Demark for visits (tourist purposes) but not for work. If you would want to work in Denmark you would have to obtain a Danish work permit. Source(s): http://www.sweden.gov.se/sb/d/2059 http://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_dk/coming_to_dk.htm

If you work in Sweden or Denmark while visiting as a "student" you will be sent home to Pakistan promptly. (I checked out your website and it seems you are from Pakistan).

If you have a visa for Sweden you would not be allowed to work in Denmark. You'd have to apply for a separate Danish work visa.
